Passkey questions

Top questions

What's a passkey?

A passkey is a secure way of signing on to your Wells Fargo account without a password.

Your passkey is stored in your device’s cloud-based password manager, and you use it to sign on the same way you unlock your device — for example, with your face, fingerprint, PIN, or passcode.

Why should I use a passkey instead of a password?

Signing on with a passkey is much more secure and convenient than using a password.

Unlike a password, a passkey can’t be guessed by hackers, leaked in a data breach, or stolen in a phishing attack. And because it’s stored securely in your cloud-based password manager, you never have to remember it, even when you get a new device.

How do I set up a passkey?

Getting your passkey is simple. In the app, you'll find passkey setup in Security Center. On a computer, you'll find it under Security & Support.

Passkey security

What makes passkeys more secure than passwords?

Because the key that's stored on your device is never shared with the app or website you're visiting, it stays private and secure. The cloud-based password managers that store your key are encrypted end-to-end, with the key not even known to the device maker. It's these security features that protect your passkey from being guessed, leaked, or stolen.

Should I use passkeys if I share my device or cloud account with someone?

No. When you create a passkey, any person with a biometric image registered on your device or who knows the PIN or passcode to unlock your device can sign into your account.

Does Wells Fargo store or have access to my device biometric image, PIN, or passcode?

No. Your biometric info (face and fingerprint), PIN, and passcode aren't shared with Wells Fargo and never leave your device.

Using your passkey

Can I use my passkey across multiple devices?

Yes. Your passkey is stored in your device's cloud-based password manager, so it works across all devices that share the same Apple ID or Google Account.

Using a passkey to sign on to a device that’s not associated with your Apple ID or Google Account? We'll have you scan a QR code with your phone to get signed on to the device.

Can I still use my username and password to sign on?

Yes. You can sign on with your username and password at any time.

Does my passkey expire?

No, passkeys don't expire. If you choose to remove a passkey from your Wells Fargo account, it won't work anymore.

How do I remove my passkey?

You can remove your Wells Fargo passkey and manage all other passkey settings from Security Center in the app, or from Security & Support on a computer.

When removing your passkey, make sure to delete it from your device settings as well.

If my device is stolen, should I remove my passkey?

Yes. Sign on from any device to remove your Wells Fargo passkey, and make sure to delete it from your device settings as well.

What device and browser type do I need to use a passkey?

Passkeys work best when your device's operating system and browser are up to date.

To use one, you'll need:

- A mobile device that runs at least iOS 16 or Android 14, along with the latest version of the Wells Fargo app

- A laptop or desktop computer that runs at least Windows 10, macOS Ventura, or ChromeOS 109

- A browser that runs at least Firefox 122, Chrome 109, Edge 109, or Safari 16
