With Bill Pay, you can pay almost any person or company in the U.S. securely and confidently, knowing your payments are covered by Wells Fargo’s Bill Pay Payment Guarantee. Rest assured your online bill payments will be accurate and on time, as long as you schedule your payments in advance and have sufficient funds available in your payment account on the day a payment is scheduled to be sent.
How our payment guarantee works
If Wells Fargo does not properly complete a bill payment on or before the “Deliver by” date, we will pay any late fees or finance charges directly caused by a delay or error on our part.
An instant payment cannot be canceled or changed, after it has been sent. If you order a payment to stop on another type of Bill Pay payment and we fail to do so, we'll also pay any related late fees or finance charges, as long as you do the following:
- Provide us with accurate information about the payment;
- Make your stop payment request no later than 7 pm Pacific Time on the payment “Send on” date. If a Bill Pay payment is sent by check, any stop payment provisions found in your specific account agreement and in the Online Access Agreement also apply.
What’s not covered by our payment guarantee
Our guarantee does not cover charges, fees, or other consequences caused by you or payment processing delays not caused by us or within our control, including if:
- You do not schedule a payment correctly or not sufficiently early for a timely delivery;
- Your account with the payee was already past due or in default before the “Deliver by” date;
- A third party fails to properly transmit payment to an intended payee (This includes paper checks delivered by the United States Postal Service (USPS), which may take longer than five business days to be delivered. If your payment is by paper check, please consider sending your payment early to avoid a late fee.);
- A payee fails to properly apply the payment to your account once delivered;
- There are insufficient available funds or credit availability in your Bill Pay payment account and/or a linked overdraft protection plan on the “Send on” date;
- A legal order directs us to prohibit withdrawals from the Bill Pay payment account;
- The payment was misrouted or delayed because the information you provided for the payee was incorrect or incomplete;
- The Bill Pay payment account is closed or frozen; or
- Any part of the electronic fund transfer system is not working properly.
Our Bill Pay Payment Guarantee also does not cover indirect, special, or consequential damages arising out of the use of the Bill Pay service. Wells Fargo does not recognize “Grace Periods,” “Late After,” “Postmarked By” dates, or other similar designations when considering the reimbursement of late fees or finance charges.
The Bill Pay Payment Guarantee will not apply to payments made to payees outside the continental U.S., or to any federal, state, or local government agency, or to court-ordered payments, as we are unable to guarantee correct delivery or routing.
Wells Fargo's Bill Pay Payment Guarantee does not cover Bill Pay payments made via financial management software or payments made to an email or U.S. mobile number using Zelle®.
Bill Pay should not be used to transfer or deposit funds into a checking, savings, brokerage, or other deposit type of account at another financial institution, unless the transfer is an instant payment in response to a Request for Payment (RfP). We can’t guarantee correct delivery or routing, and the Bill Pay Payment Guarantee does not cover this type of transfer.
